FERRET COLOURS AND TYPES

These are the main colours of ferrets bred today, in the UK we only have a few names for the majority of colours, the chart below is a US chart of the ferret colours and types bred, America seems to breed allot more colour types than we do in the UK at the moment.

As you can see there are quite a few colours available and as more ferrets are bred I suspect more variety in colours will be produced. Colour does not affect a ferrets working ability at all, it is mealy to ones choice. Breeding colours can be very interesting and some nice colours can be achieved by crossing one type with another and so on, but to breed true you must keep records of PEDIGREE and have some idea on genetics to get the best results. Colours tend to be more inline with pet owners and showing ferrets than the Working strains of ferrets, a ferret is a ferret no matter what colour. I am not going to harp on about ferret colours or how to go about breeding a certain colour or strain of ferret as it is far more complicated than one thinks and would take far to much time, my goal in this Site is mainly to educate on the ferreting and keeping of ferrets and the like. But for those who wish to partake in trying to breed colours or strains of ferrets such as the old type greyhound or very tiny ferrets then that is up to them.

Below is the only Hybrid that I know of and this is a EUROPEAN MINK CROSS POLECAT a interesting cross but whether it as any use in ferreting or  breeding I have no idea, but still it remains a nice hybrid for ones whom are interested in such crosses, but don't forget hybridizing can and does lead to problems and sometimes spoils the true animal and it's breed.
